According to Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017 (still the gold standard in 2026), the rules are crystal clear across the UAE:
Before you book any tint job, make sure you know the exact rules. These limits apply to almost everyone on the road — whether you own your car privately, drive a company vehicle, or even rent one.
Front Windshield: No aftermarket tint is allowed at all. The windshield must stay completely clear and factory-fresh (minimum 70% Visible Light Transmission). The only exception is a thin factory-style sun strip at the very top — and even that can’t be more than about 5 inches (12–15 cm) high. Anything else, even super-light “clear” or “transparent” film, is considered illegal.
You’re allowed a maximum of 50% tint (which means 50% Visible Light Transmission or VLT). This applies to both the front side windows (driver and passenger) and all rear windows, including the back windshield. In simple terms, at least half the light must still pass through.
These rules are the same for private cars, rental vehicles, and company fleets. Police carry special meters to check the tint on the spot. If your film is darker than these limits, you’ll get hit with a fine (usually starting at AED 1,500), and you may be ordered to remove the tint right away. In serious cases, your car can even fail the RTA inspection or get impounded.

Anything below these VLT numbers is considered “too dark” and you’re breaking Federal Traffic Law. Police use special meters during random checks—especially during summer crackdowns.
A lot of drivers think “transparent tint” (super light, almost invisible film) on the front windshield is a loophole. Spoiler: it isn’t.
The law wants your windshield fully clear for one simple reason – safety. Any film, even light, can create glare at night, distort vision in rain or fog, or mess with your view during those 50°C summer sandstorms. The RTA isn’t playing around: they want you (and everyone else on the road) to see clearly.
We’ve heard stories of people who tried “clear” front tints only to get pulled over in Sharjah or Dubai and hit with fines plus the hassle of removing it on the spot. Not worth it.
Plus, super-dark tints can actually make night driving dangerous—you miss pedestrians, road signs, or that sudden brake light ahead.
Here’s where it gets good. If you want serious heat rejection, UV protection, and privacy without playing Russian roulette with the law, premium brands like ProTech Monte Carlo are built exactly for UAE roads.
